Jennifer Buehler, Ph.D., a beloved educator, scholar, author and mother from St. Louis, Missouri, died on August 28, 2026, following a traffic accident while riding her bicycle. She was 56 and passed away surrounded by family at Mercy Hospital. Jennifer’s life was deeply connected to education and a love of books. A Yale graduate, she later earned a master’s degree from Eastern Michigan University and a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. She joined Saint Louis University in 2009 and spent 17 years teaching in its School of Education, where she became an associate professor and served as director of graduate programs in educational studies. Her work was driven by a belief that literature could help young people understand themselves and the world around them. Jennifer was especially passionate about young adult literature, inclusive education and intellectual freedom, and she strongly opposed book banning. Away from her professional life, Jennifer was a wife, mother, sister and friend who cherished the people closest to her. She and her husband, Mark Patrick, were married for nearly 33 years, and she deeply loved their son, Ethan. She also enjoyed reading simply for pleasure, cycling and counted cross-stitch, while maintaining a decades-long connection to Bear Creek Aquatic Camp in Kentucky. Her family described her as deeply empathetic, someone whose warmth naturally led her to form meaningful friendships wherever she went.
